August 12: Palarong Pinoy, atbp!

After a few Fridays off from Let's Get F.I.T. (due to other activities like the celebration of Nutrition Month), we got back to Friday Interaction Time last August 12, for another round of team games!

Since most schools celebrate "Buwan ng Wika" during the month of August, we decided to teach the students a traditional Filipino children's game, Tumbang Preso.  For most of them, it was their first time to play this game!

Teacher Hazel demonstrates how to play.

Then, it was game time for the kids!

During the first round, some found it quite challenging...

But others showed good form! (Go, Dan!)

Funny! Although it was Linggo ng Wika, our [tomato sauce] cans were Italian!!!

In round two, the kids were a little more comfortable, but still, only a few scored a point!

The First Year students take the final hits!

With a total score of 5 points, Team Love won the Tumbang Preso relay challenge.  The two other teams garnered 3 points each.  Afterward, the teachers give it a try too.

Sr. Epi gives it a shot...

Tr. Bianca, Tr. Jazell and Tr. Bambi also take their turns!

The next game was a Wheel of Fortune / Hangman type game, where blanks corresponding to the number of letters of a word or phrase was drawn on the board, and the students had to ask "Meron bang titik...?" If they guessed a letter that was in the word/phrase, the facilitator would fill up that space... and the group would keep going until they could guess the whole word or phrase. If they said a letter that wasn't in the word/phrase, the next team would take their turn to guess.

Still sticking to the "Buwan ng Wika" theme, all the words/phrases that they had to guess were in Tagalog.  In the first few rounds, we provided a category ("tao", "lugar", "pagbati", etc.) -- but because we noticed it was too easy for them, we took out the category "clue" in the later rounds.

Trying to guess the word "malungkot."

Bea: "Meron bang titik....?"

Team Transformers: thinking of the next letter to call out.

Once again, Team Love won this game, with a score of 3 points.  They were the over-all winners of the day!  Congratulations!

The other teams congratulate and shake hands with Team Love members.

July 22: Team Work!

For the 2nd "Let's Get F.I.T.!" session, we decided to do get some TEAM SPIRIT going among the students in Gualandi.  We previously grouped them into three (3) teams -- and when it was F.I.T. time, we gathered them in the outside area of the school.  The first order of the day was to think of a TEAM NAME, elect a TEAM CAPTAIN and come up with a TEAM CHEER (complete with actions / choreography!).

The "LOVE TEAM" / Team Captain: JC

The "NARUTO TEAM" / Team Captain: Ram

The "TRANSFORMERS TEAM" / Team Captain : Shean

TEAM CHEERS!!!

Team Love

Team Naruto

Team Transformers

After each of the teams presented their cheers, it was time for a team challenge.  The game was called "The Atomic Bomb Transfer" -- where each team had to transfer 5 cups of water from one side to the other, using a device with a small cardboard platform (to place the glass on) and 8 long strings attached (they were to hold only the end of the strings).

Team Love goes first...

Team Naruto goes next...

And finally, Team Transformers...

The team that transferred all 5 glasses in the fastest amount of time was Team Transformers!  Congratulations!!! :-)

For the next game, it was time to include the pre-schoolers with the bigger kids.

In order to make sure the little ones were taken cared of in the next game, we assigned each of them to a kuya (older brother).

The game was the all-time favorite, "The Boat is Sinking."  The kuya was to include his partner in any grouping he became a part of (and he was to count the pair of them only as one person).

Okay... The boat is sinking, group yourselves into...

The boys do a good job being kuya....

The game gets more and more exciting...

Until the last four kids are left standing.... OUR WINNERS!!!

After a great morning of friendly competition and fun games, the teams gathered together again for a final round of photo ops.

Team Transformers

Congratulations again everyone for another wonderful "Let's Get F.I.T.!" Day! :-)  Til the next one... :-)

July 15: Let's Get F.I.T.! Launch

Last July 15, we launched one of the new programs at the Joseph Gualandi School for Hearing Impaired -- Let's Get F.I.T.! -- Friday Interaction Time. The objective of this program is to provide the students with opportunities to interact with one another and provide activities that will help them grow in other areas of learning, outside their classrooms.

The activity for the day was the "Human Bingo." Each student was given a customized "bingo card", on which various attributes / traits / descriptions were written in each box.  Their goal was to approach the student who "fit" each description and have that person sign their name on the paper.  Some items were objective (i.e. - "Tallest Boy"), while others were quite subjective ("Most Respectful Student").

Teacher Sheryll explains the mechanics of the game.

This was the bingo card that the students had to fill up.

The teachers demonstrating how to play.

Ready, get set... GO!!!

Students swarm over to Kyla!

Please sign here...

Timothy patiently signs a lot of papers too!

 More scrambling around...

After we got the first five up on stage, it was time to check the answers....

All in all, it was a fun-filled morning for all the students of the Joseph Gualandi School!  It was a great way to kick-off the "Let's Get F.I.T.!" program.  Congratulations to all the teachers and sisters for the wonderful job in making this launch a success!
